FOOTNOTES: Amongst a group of equally elderly souls, the subject had fallen again to memory or rather its various vagaries. We all agreed how a piece of music or a particular smell or scent could revive times long past. I am as guilty of this as anyone. Keys can be found in the fridge and a pack of bacon hung from the keyboard, but listening to certain pieces of music brings back long lost memories of situations, people and shows, with unerring accuracy. Likewise the smell of new mown grass has me reliving hot sunny afternoons lying with a lover on Blackheath, the happy sound of children laughing and splashing in a pond nearby. The smell of oil and rubber and I am transported back to a bicycle shop in Crystal Palace with my father, buying my first grown up bike. One rarely catches the scent of cheese, biscuits, bacon and dried peas together these days but when I do I remember being with my mother in Sainsburys, long before self service, or supermarkets, queuing patiently using the old Bentwood chairs provided for customers and being fascinated by the man measuring out the butter with two wooden spatulas, wondering how he managed to cut the exact amount ordered from the huge slab of butter in front of him. The money was then placed into a small container, a quick tug on a wooden handle and it was sent whizzing across the ceiling on wires to the cashier’s small kiosk, the change and a receipt zooming back via the same wire. Perhaps my favourite scent is standing in an English garden, late at night, and inhaling the heady smell of earth, grass and various plants recovering from the heat of the day. My job has taken me to so many foreign locations, where the sounds and smells have been varied and exotic. The muezzin calling the faithful to prayer, the heady scent of Jacaranda trees in blossom with their beautiful blue flowers. Now, here at home I revel in the smell of the sea, and the sound of white topped rollers crashing against the shore and breakwaters, and throwing huge fountains of frothy water and spray into the air leaving the taste of salt on the lips. I often catch myself saying that I cannot remember a thing these days, and it is true I have to rely heavily on shopping lists and diaries to remind me of daily tasks, but the real memories are still there, the people, the countries, the situations, both comic and tragic, remain, and it only takes a snatch of music or a certain scent to have then flooding back. So, swapping the bacon for the keys in the fridge, I console myself with this and indeed, judge myself lucky to still be able to recall those long, lost days. Enjoy your week and go safely where ever your journeys take you.
