ESK Gardening Club meets on Thursday, September 13, for one-to-one gardening advice from a team of experts, who will be happy to answer all your queries about plants and garden related issues. Meetings are at the Garden Centre in Courtlands Road, 5.30pm-8pm. The club is free to join and meets every Thursday in the summer for talks, demonstrations and workshops. THE FIRST World War will be the subject of a talk The Quick and The Dead by Richard Van Emden at the Redoubt Fortress on Saturday, September 15, at 2.30pm. The cost is £12.50 for adults, £10 concession for senior citizens, students and under 16s. Richard Van Emden has been involved in several television programmes about the Great War and interviewed 270 veterans to obtain first hand stories for his many best selling books. Richard will speak about the war, what happened to relatives left at home, and how their experiences influenced future generations. Tickets available from the Redoubt Museum reception or on 410300.

A FIFTIES Night is the next social and fundraising event at Christ Church and will be held in St Augustine’s Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday, September 15. This will be a nostalgic evening when a variety of speakers will share reminiscences of theatre, cinema, television, music, adverts, wireless, the food, the Royal Family, the fashions, and life in general in the 1950s. Tickets at £8, which will include ploughman’s supper and 1950s style pudding of fruit in jelly, can be booked with Meg on 487229. Places must be booked by Thursday September 13.
