I remember Judge Claude Duveen sitting at Slough telling a stroppy juvenile defendant: ‘If you don’t behave in my court I will allow the press to publish your name! And they’ll spell it all wrong!’
ON Friday, for the fifth year running, Neil McLaren and his group of talented and internationally-acclaimed professional musicians will be at St Nicolas Church to entertain and enthrall. Alison Bury, violin, Catherine Rimer, ‘cello, and Tom Foster, harpsichord, with Neil, on flute, will re-create the atmosphere of the ‘Sans Souci’ palace in the mid-18th century with a performance, by candlelight, of J S Bach’s “Musical Offering”.
You are invited to bring a picnic in the churchyard from 7pm. Wine and soft drinks will be available, and entry to the concert is £10. You can pay at the door, but call 764449 to reserve your places.
THIS year’s St Nic’s Summer Draw, with a £100 1st prize, will be launched at the concert and carried on throughout the Festival Weekend until the concert on August 29 when there’ll be a ceremonial drawing of the lucky tickets. Draw tickets will be on sale at the Fete (in addition there will be a general raffle with the usual small prizes).
As in previous years members of both congregations will be asked to sell 10 tickets at £1 each, to be distributed, in envelopes, in mid July. If you have any queries call Gill Visick on 764449.

SPECTACULAR flowers, and vegetables as well as cookery and photography will be on display at Pevensey Area Gardeners Annual Show, at St Wilfrids Hall, Pevensey Bay, on Saturday ,August. 18. Doors open 1.30pm and it costs nothing to get in. There is always a hot cuppa and piece of cake available.
VILLAGE in Bloom is upon us with judging taking place until Friday, sponsored by our Parish Council. Good news is entrants in the business and community classes will have a better chance because as sponsor, the winner for the last two years has been barred from entering!
YOU won’t recognize the ballast ship Sospan Dau when she comes to recharge the beach later this year. She’s had a bulbous prow fitted for efficient sailing. And yes it is a strange name for a ship. Sospan Dau is Welsh for Saucepan Two.
