Down Your Way: Hellingly (June 20th)

CHURCH SERVICES: Regular services are on a Thursday at 9.30am – Holy Communion (BCP) and every Sunday 8am Holy Communion at 10.45am and Upper Dicker 9.15 Holy Communion (CW).

SCHOOL CENTENARY: The opening of Hellingly Hospital, with new staff moving into the area, had a ‘knock-on’ affect on education and the village school was too small. So, in 1912 the present school opened it doors on June 6 to its new influx of pupils.

You are invited to a programme of events to celebrate the centenary, from June 25-30. These include a visit on June 29 of WW2 ‘Sweetheart of the Forces’ Dame Vera Lynn, to unveil a commemorative mosaic, cut an anniversary cake, and listen to the children sing the White Cliffs of Dover.

Former staff, pupils and governors are invited to visit the school. Past head teachers and deputies will speak at special assemblies.

There will be a tea party on Saturday, June 30, with music, an exhibition of memorabilia and school records, and tours.

Also on June 30 at 7.30pm there is a Jazz Supper with the Peter Wilson Quartet, for all former staff members, pupils and friends of the school.

It is not too late, if you have anything to contribute - photos etc, will be returned. Entry and tickets £5 (for over 18s). To aid catering arrangements call 01323-844346 or e-mail Bring your own liquid refreshment.

HELLINGLY Community Park Trust intend holding a walk for members of the HCPT soon after the play areas for children and open space at Roebuck Park are opened, probably early August. Members will be contacted with a confirmed date.

DICKER residents had a lively meeting in the village hall recently owing to questions and discussions on the important planning applications. The items were the St Bede’s Masterplan, the Wise Site and the Village Shop & Café.

Other items covered were membership, finances, events, police liaison, local development strategy and its effect on affordable and other housing limits in Arlington Parish. Also discussed were speedwatch, traffic management plan, other items from the Parish Action Plan Group.
