A dog launched a vicious attack on a cygnet in a park.
The animal was spotted savaging the young swan in Hampden Park recently.
An adult male swan came to the defence of the helpless youngster, only to be attacked by the dog.
The owner was challenged, but allegedly told passers-by: “What is the problem, it is only a swan.”
The East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service has reassured concerned residents that the swans were OK following the incident.
The Friends of the Hampden Park are urging anyone with information to come forward.
A spokesperson for the group said: “Between us we will try to re-educate the owner. Dogs around the pond must be kept on a lead. Our swans are protected.”
Anyone who witnesses any further attacks is asked to contact Sussex Police on 101, Eastbourne Borough Council on 410000 and the Friends of the Hampden Park on 07802 884088 with the time, location and date of the attack.
