A WOMAN is still missing off the coast of Eastbourne after a diving trip ended in tragedy.
The 52-year-old woman is believed to have fallen from the diving boat, Betty Louise, as she resurfaced after diving on a wreck with friends six miles off the coast near the Royal Sovereign Light Tower on Tuesday lunchtime.
Lifeboats, the Coastguard helicopter and passing fishing vessels were involved in an eight hour search for the woman but it was eventually called off late on Tuesday night.
Enquiries are continuing with the coastguard and lifeboat and the woman has now been recorded as a missing person.
A spokesperson for the RNLI said, “This is an absolute tragedy. After over eight hours at sea conducting a thorough co-ordinated search of the area with nothing found and with failing light, the search was called off at 9.15pm.”
