Work to begin dismantling the burnt out structure of Eastbourne Pier this morning (Tuesday) has been delayed because of high winds.

Engineers and demolition experts arrived at the seafront structure at first light to begin the mammoth task of taking down the former Blue Room arcade and two specialist cranes are in place.

But because wind speeds were more than 14 miles an hour, the crane which hoists a basket carrying two workmen up into the skies to begin cutting the metal away was not allowed to operate.

Engineers are assessing the situation throughout the day and said they remained hopeful wind speeds would drop later in the day so work could begin.
