AS DOORBELLS ring across the south east this Christmas, a water company is reminding customers how to stay safe from bogus callers.
Even if the great man himself, Father Christmas, knocks at the door, South East Water wants to ensure customers know what to do to ensure the person on their doorstep is exactly who they say they are.
Steve George, customer services director at South East Water, said, “We know Christmas can be a time that opportunist thieves take advantage of vulnerable people, knowing there are new presents and gifts in the home.
“So we want to get the message out to customers that there are simple steps that can be taken to stay safe.
“Distraction burglary is a despicable crime committed on the most vulnerable and trusting people in our society.
“Sometimes our staff have to make unplanned visits to your home, but they will always be happy to wait while you check their credentials and will always show you their photographic ID cards before asking to be let in.”
South East Water has this advice for customers to protect themselves against distraction burglary:
Make sure your back door is always locked before going to the front door
If you have a door chain, put it on before you open the door
Check to see who is at the door by looking through a window or spy hole
South East Water staff always wear a uniform with the company name on it
Staff always carry an identity card bearing a photograph, name, logo and number on it
Look out for the South East Water van. Staff will always wait for you to check who they are by telephoning South East Water 0333 000 0002
Customers can set up a password either by calling us on the number above or via our website www.southeastwater.co.uk
