Two police officers charged in connection with Eastbourne assault

Two Sussex Police officers will appear in court to face charges of an assault in Eastbourne following an investigation by the police watchdog.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct announced the decision today (Tuesday December 8).

Forty-six-year-old PC Deborah Sands and 35-year-old PC Kris Green are due to appear at Brighton Magistrates Court on Thursday December 10.

The charges relate to an incident in Eastbourne on Tuesday (May 19) when PC Sands and PC Green allegedly PAVA sprayed and struck a minor in the head when she was handcuffed inside a police vehicle after her arrest.

A spokesperson at the IOPC said, “Our investigation followed a referral from Sussex Police in July 2020 after the force reviewed the officers’ body worn video of the incident.

“We completed our investigation in November and passed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the assault charges contrary to Section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988.”
