Police tape off village road near Eastbourne after fly-tipping incident

Police taped off a village road between Hailsham and Pevensey after reports of fly-tipping.

According to reports, the incident in Rickney Lane, Pevensey, was discovered early this morning (Wednesday) at 6am.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said, “Fly-tipping is the responsibility of the local authority; we purely assisted with a road closure as a precaution.”

A Wealden District Council spokesperson said, “Wealden District Council’s Street Scene Team attended a fly tip at Rickney Lane, Hailsham, on Wednesday morning (March 4). The fly tip had blocked the road to all traffic and had to be cordoned off. The council’s cleansing contractor, Biffa, cleared the considerable amount of rubbish and the road was reopened within 90 minutes of the initial report.

“Investigations are underway to identify those responsible for damaging our environment and blocking this country lane endangering road users.

“The Street Scene Team would like to remind all householders that they have a duty of care to ensure that contractors removing waste from their home, including scrap metal, is registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier. If your rubbish is found dumped you must be able to prove who you employed to take it away.”
