A teenage girl has told police she was raped in a Hailsham alley at 9.30pm by a man who knew her name.

The local girl reported the attack to police on August 26, saying she had been raped eight days earlier on Saturday, August 18, as she walked in an alley at around 9.30pm.

Officers have been working with the girl to establish what happened and have followed up a number of enquiries. Detectives are now seeking help from the public.

The girl says that she was walking along Black Path approaching another footpath that leads into Chapel Barn Close when the man called out her name and grabbed her before she was raped.

She describes the man as white, 25 to 30 years, with brown or ginger hair and had a dark or brown thick beard. He was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms and a grey hoodie with the hood up.

DS Dave Bristow said, “Some time had passed before the report was made to us and officers have interviewed the girl and made a number of enquiries. “The girl has assisted us with an image of the man and we are asking the public to help us identify him.

“If anyone has information they should contact police on 101 quoting OP Blaze, serial 1673 on 26 August. They can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Insp Tony Wakefield, Wealden district, said, “Incidents of this type are rare and I would like to reassure the public that we are doing all we can to support this investigation.

“It would appear that the man knew the girl’s name although she does not know him. I would encourage anyone who is concerned or has information to speak to officers.”
