A police chase through the streets of Lewes resulted in a man being arrested for multiple offences.

Officers on patrol in the town last night (August 17) spotted a speeding car at around 9pm in Nevill Road and signalled for it to stop.

The vehicle initially failed to do so, according to Sussex Police, and a short pursuit ensued.

It eventually stopped in Horsfield Road, where police say the driver and passenger were detained.

The driver failed a roadside drugs test, police said, and a search of the car resulted in a small amount of cannabis being found and seized.

A 35-year-old man from Lewes was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, dangerous driving, possession of cannabis, driving with no insurance and failing to stop when required by police.

Sussex Police say he remains in custody at this stage.
