A MAN was due to appear in court yesterday (Monday) in connection with kidnapping a woman who was found in Eastbourne.
Stephen James Webber, 41, unemployed, of George Williams Mews, Portslade, was set to appear at Brighton Magistrates Court charged with one offence of kidnap, two offences of assault by beating, and one offence of causing actual bodily harm.
The charges follow police enquiries into the disappearance on Tuesday, July 10, of Laura Chapman, 26 of Westbourne Gardens, Hove.
Laura, 26, a receptionist at a hair and beauty website firm in Portland Road, Hove, had not been seen at her home in Westbourne Gardens since Tuesday when she left to go to work, but did not show up.
Laura was found walking near Eastbourne on Saturday and treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for superficial injuries but was discharged in the evening.
Her family has been informed and police are currently talking to her and making sure she receives appropriate welfare support.
Detective Inspector Mick Jones from Brighton CID said, “We, and Laura’s family, are very glad that she has been found.
“We would also like to thank the many local people who have also expressed concern and offered their support.
“Our enquiries into the circumstances of Laura’s disappearance continue.”
