HAILSHAM: Police appeal for witnesses after Cuckoo Trail assault

A MAN was repeatedly punched in the face after taking a short cut through the Cuckoo Trial footpath in Hailsham on Christmas Eve.

The 39-year-old victim from Hailsham was followed along the footpath by a young man and woman as he cut through to London Road at about 9pm.

The suspect hurled abuse at the victim before following him to near the Grenadier pub where he was then punched several times in the face.

He was taken to the Eastbourne District General Hospital for treatment to minor injuries.

The young woman who was with the suspect tried to intervene, but was unable to prevent the assault.

The man is described as white, aged between 18 to 21, around six foot tall, with brown hair and wearing dark jogging bottoms and a black coat with a hooded top underneath.

The woman was of similar age, with black hair and wearing dark clothing.

Both made off down the Cuckoo Trail after the attack.

DC Ian Dearling from Hailsham CID said, “I’m keen to talk to anyone who witnessed the attack, especially the young woman, or who has any information about the couple.”
