HAILSHAM: Man charged over abduction of three-year-old from his home

A HAILSHAM man has been charged with abducting a three-year-old boy from the town.

Stephen Howlett, 53, of The Diplocks, Hailsham, has been charged by police with taking a child, after the young boy went missing from his home in Solway Hailsham in the early hours of October 1 last year.

The youngster was reunited with his mother after he was returned safe and well to Hailsham Police Station by a man the next day.

The boy was reported missing at 8.45am on the Friday by his mother who last saw him when she put him to bed at around 11pm the night before.

At the time, Chief Inspector Julia Pope, District Commander for Wealden, said she was pleased the boy had been returned safe and well and reunited with his mother.

“We do not know where he has been but believe he has been looked after and is fine,” she said.

Mr Howlett is due to appear at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court on January 19.
