Girl, 4, racially abused during attack on family

A FOUR-year-old-girl was one of three family members racially abused by a gang of yobs who also hurled at a brick at their victims’ car.

The young girl was with her mum and gran when the trio were targeted by a group of five men in Beatty Road at around 11pm on Monday. Police say the men, who appeared drunk, went up the family and started abusing them in the street.

Then, when the victims were picked up by a relative in a silver Honda Civic, one of the men picked up a brick and threw it at the car, damaging the bonnet.

The man who threw the brick is described as white, in his 20s, of medium build and around six foot tall. He was wearing a hi-vis fluorescent jacket, as were the other men and police think they may have been picked up in a taxi and taken into Eastbourne town centre.

Before the incident, they may have been in the harbour area.

Police also want to speak to a young man, aged between 18 and 20, of chubby build, wearing three-quarter length jeans and riding a BMX bike who was seen stopping to talk to the group.

PC Steven Shimmons moved to reassure the public and visitors to the town that was a rare case. He said, “This was very harrowing for all of the victims, not least because of the racial aspect of it, but especially as the youngest victim, the grand-daughter, is just four years old.

“It’s not a crime that we’re used to seeing in Eastbourne and it’s certainly not one that will be tolerated.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information should call 101 quoting serial 2208 of 20/08.
