A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council said, “We are working with police and checking CCTV footage to identify who is responsible for vandalism to four memorial benches on the seafront at Holywell on Friday night.

“The broken benches and scattered debris were cleared away on Saturday morning.

“As these were memorial benches, we are making contact with families to find out whether they wish for replacements to be arranged.

“This was a mindless act of vandalism that is upsetting for families with memorial benches which were ruined, as well as inconveniencing many people who come to our wonderful seafront and used these benches.”

Five lifebuoys were also vandalised on the western end of the beach at the start of the month.
