Female conductor assaulted on football fans’ train

A FEMALE conductor was assaulted on a train at Polegate at the weekend.

The attack took place on a Southern service which was at Polegate Railway Station on Saturday shortly before 7.30pm.

The train, the 18.52 Brighton Ore service, was full of passengers who had been at the Brighton and Hove Albion match against Nottingham Forest at the American Express Community Stadium at Falmer.

The incident was reported to police and officers from Sussex Police and British Transport Police rushed to the scene.

Train services were delayed for up to 45 minutes in the Eastbourne area.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said, “As a result of the incident, a number of train services were delayed.

“We are appealing for anyone who was on the train at the time or who has any information about the incident to come forward and assist us with our enquiries.

“Members of railway staff, conductors and station managers should be able to go about their duties without fear and BTP will do all it can to bring those individuals to justice.”

A 32-year-old man from Hailsham was arrested on suspicion of assault and following questioning has been bailed to return to Eastbourne Police Station on Wednesday January 4 pending further enquiries.
