East Sussex County Councillor Jeremy Birch has died in hospital.
Cllr Birch, who was also leader of Hastings Borough Council, was taken to hospital after he fell ill on Friday afternoon (May 1) and had remained in a medically-induced coma since then.
His partner Louise issued a statement through Hastings council on Wednesday evening (May 6) saying, “It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Jeremy Birch.
“The family would like to express their thanks to the critical care unit at the Conquest Hospital.
“We want it to be noted that the staff at the Conquest have been committed, compassionate and professional.
“We do not think we could have had a better service anywhere else.”
Cllr Birch had served on East Sussex County Council for 20 years and had served as a borough councillor in Hastings for the same amount of time.
