A LUCKY Eastbourne couple have won a year’s paid council tax.
Alwyn Davies, 65, and Elaine Davies, 58, of Compton Street, were presented with the prize this week – which equates to a saving of £1,602.77 – after entering a council competition in April.
Entrants were sent a leaflet with their main council tax bill advising that everyone who paid by direct debit or who signed up for it would be entered into a prize draw to have their council tax paid for this financial year, up to the value of a Band D property.
Eastbourne Borough Council has seen an increase in the number of direct debit payments since last year to 74 per cent in August.
Alwyn said, “We couldn’t believe it. We thought it was a hoax at first because we couldn’t remember entering the competition.
“We’re really happy and would like to thank everyone at Eastbourne Borough Council who made it possible, it’s been really wonderful.”
Elaine added, “We’re moving home soon so the money is going to be really handy.”
