Council plans to switch street lights

Residents in the Sovereign area of Eastbourne will be able to have their say on proposed changes to street lighting at an event on Saturday (July 6).

Members of East Sussex County Council’s street lighting team will be on hand to answer questions between 9am and 12noon at the Sovereign Centre. The changes are part of a county-wide bid to save £885,000 by 2016 by changing the way roads are lit and replacing street lights with LED alternatives.

Plans for Sovereign include replacing the existing lanterns with lower wattage LED lanterns, upgrading the majority of the decorative lights with LED lamps and dimming lights in the larger streets during the late evening and early hours of the morning. Work is being carried out on a ward by ward basis and proposals have been drawn up by ESCC in consultation with Eastbourne Borough Council, Sussex Police and other stakeholders. Comments or concerns about the proposed changes in the Sovereign ward can also be made through the county council website at or at local libraries.
