EASTBOURNE’S Charlie Smith shares his date of birth with a very special person – Her Majesty The Queen.
Charlie was born on April 21, 1926, exactly the same day as the Queen, and will be turning 86 next week.
Welbeing (Eastbourne and Wealden Lifeline) sends each of their 40,000 customers a birthday card and spotted the date.
Welbeing marketing manager Charlene Saunders said, “When Charlie’s birthday came to light we decided to make his celebration extra special by creating a large commemorative Diamond Jubilee card from him to The Queen.
“The card features a picture of Charlie as a young man on the beach taken at around the time of the Coronation.
“He also gave us a lovely message for Her Majesty to go inside.”
The message to The Queen reads, “Wishing Your Majesty a very happy birthday.
“With regards to Your Majesty’s 60-year reign, Your Majesty has done a marvellous job and long may it continue.
“I am privileged to share my birthday, 21 April, 1926, with Your Majesty.”
Charlie and his wife Mary moved to Eastbourne 20 years ago after many day trips to the town and years of living in South London, where Charlie worked as a master welder.
They have been married for 50 years this year and have a daughter.
Charlene added, “We visited Charlie this week so he could sign the card before posting and to leave him with a copy as a memento.
“In the year of the Diamond Jubilee it is terrific that we have a local lifeline customer born on the same day as The Queen.”
