A £250,000 cash boost is on its way to the Towner.
The money is coming from Grants for the Arts, the Arts Council England’s open application funding programme.
It will be spread over two years and targeted at establishing the Towner with a charitable trust status.
This process will include the development of various areas of the Towner operation, including partnership strategies, securing commercial and project sponsorships, volunteer and board member training and new commissioning policies.
Senior head of tourism and leisure Tracey McNulty said, “This grant demonstrates how important the Towner is to the Arts Council.
“The funding ensures support for developing all the business and revenue generating functions and transition to trust.
“It will ensure the team can maintain their award-winning work locally and nationally and continue to attract internationally acclaimed exhibitions.”
Regional south east director of Arts Council England Sally Abbott said, “Grants for the Arts enables the stability for arts organisations to deliver their vision and helps them to produce excellent and innovative art; making art available to as many people as possible.”
