More than £7,500 was raised at this year’s Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival, organisers have revealed.

Some £5,406.60 was donated to bucket collectors who joined the seafront procession at the end of May and with sponsorship of more than £2,000, it means half of the total will be donated to charitable organisations which took part in the parade.

Carnival patron Stephen Lloyd said, “The success of this years Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival with more floats, larger crowds and almost 2,000 people taking part in the parade has been matched by even more generosity from local residents and visitors.

“The remaining half then goes toward the running costs of next years carnival. As residents know, I was always determined to build strong foundations under our wonderful carnival to ensure it would never leave Eastbourne again.

“The support and generosity of the public is helping this happen and for that I am hugely grateful. Thank you. The Eastbourne buzz is well and truly up and running.”

Pageant Master David Cooper said, “For me being able to see the benefit that the collection gives to local charities makes all the hard work worthwhile.

“We have started work on 2015 already and I hope that the progression we have seen in entrants and crowd attendance will continue. I think we have come on a long way from 2012 when we restarted the carnival and we continue to learn.”

Thousands of people lined the seafront on Saturday May 31 for the annual parade, the third organised by Stephen Lloyd’s MP’s Commission.

The 2014 Rio by the Sea-themed parade from the Western Lawns to Princes Park and included 80 floats, marching bands, drummers, charities, businesses, children’s groups and other organisations.

The winning float was Eastbourne YMCA which has been presented with the Winner’s Shield.
