An Eastbourne resident is hoping to raise the profile of a local committee that raises funds for charity.

Ruth Morris says the Eastbourne and District Fundraising Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support is looking for people to join the team and is also keen to hear from volunteers who can give their time to help with fundraisers.

The group has been going for more than 20 years but folded after numbers dwindled. It was re-established in March 2006.

Ruth, who is the secretary, has been affected by the disease and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and also lost her husband Brian and her first father-in-law to the disease.

The 61-year-old, who started fundraising around 10 years ago and helping out with supermarket collections, said the chance to become involved in the committee came ‘at the right time’ for her and as she was recovering from chemotherapy.

She said, “I used to be a librarian for 30 years and someone at the first meeting saw me take notes and said you look like you should be the secretary.”

The receptionist has been in the role ever since and the committee has organised many fundraisers over the years as well as being well supported by the community who hold their own events to raise cash.

Table top sales, dinners, golf days and concerts have all helped to boost the charity’s coffers and Ruth said the funds raised by and for the local committee sees a high percentage ring-fenced for the local area.

Since the committee re-formed just over £247,000 has been raised and it is the second highest yielding local committee in Sussex.

Ruth is hoping the good work can be continued and is keen for people who are interested to get in touch.

She said of the Macmillan Cancer Support, “I think it’s a worthwhile cause.”

“We’re always looking for volunteers for all these different events and if anyone is interested in joining the committee they can get in touch with me and come along to a meeting to see what we do.

“We are a very friendly group.”
