Trading Standards Information and Advice: Is your electric blanket safe?

As the nights are turning colder the Trading Standards Institute is urging householders to get their electric blankets tested before switching them on.

Like every year trading standards services and local councils up and down the country are offering free testing in the autumn months - a high proportion of electric blankets, often up to 40 per cent fail these checks.

Furthermore, over the past 10 years there have been 27 serious house fires in East Sussex as a result of faulty electric blankets. An old or damaged electric blanket can cause fires, burns and electric shocks that could be fatal.

You can contact your local council or visit this website to find out dates and venues for testing in your area.

These events offer so much more than just blanket testing; they also provide a welcome opportunity for residents to receive advice about a wide range of public safety and welfare issues.

Come along to an electric blanket testing venue near you to make sure you have a warm and safe winter and find out what help and advice Trading Standards are able to offer while you are there!
