A lightning strike is believed to have caused a fire which destroyed part of a block of flats in Hailsham last night (Thursday).
Fire crews from Eastbourne, Hailsham, Herstmonceux and Heathfield were called to the flats in The Diplocks shortly after 9pm after reports a lightning strike had started a blaze in a top floor flat.
Residents of the flats were evacuated and moved to temporary accommodation at the Travelodge at the Boship roundabout by Wealden District Council. Nobody was hurt in the fire.
An eye witness and neighbour told the Herald, “I heard a massive bang. I had never heard a sound like it. I came outside and saw flames at the top of the building and tiles and debris falling off the roof. You could see the side of the building collapsing.
“I went over and started knocking on doors trying to make sure people were out safely.”
Fire crews from Uckfield and Seaford remained at the scene until the early hours along with officials from gas and electricity networks.
