BREAKING NEWS: Eastbourne pier closes due to weather conditions

Eastbourne pier has closed today (Wednesday) as rain and high winds continue to lash the coast.

As well as the poor weather seeing the pier close it has also led to travel chaos for motorists and commuters in Sussex.

Rail passengers travelling between Eastbourne and Ashford International faced severe disruption this morning due to shingle and flooding affecting the line between Bexhill and Hastings.

Elsewhere a landslip between Newhaven Harbour and Seaford was also causing chaos for commuters.

Yesterday (Tuesday) the Pevensey area was put on flood warning between the Sovereign Harbour and beach including the area of Beachlands, Normans Bay and The Cooden Beach Hotel. This saw emergency response officers from Eastbourne Borough Council and Wealden District Council set up a rest centre last night at the Sovereign Centre in Eastbourne to provide shelter in case high tides forced local residents to leave their homes.

A spokesperson for Eastbourne Borough Council said, “Officers and local councillors from Wealden, Rother and Eastbourne visited seafront homes on Tuesday evening to warn householders of the possibility of flooding, to inform them of the rest centre and check on any vulnerable people.

“Eight people including a family of a six took refuge in the Eastbourne rest centre during the night, safe from the threat of flooding.”
