Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor George Osbourne have been in Eastbourne this morning (Friday) to see the town’s devastated Pier and meet emergency service crews who tackled the blaze earlier this week and traders who have lost their livelihoods.

The PM arrived by helicopter and was driven under police escort to the town’s Lifeboat Station before meeting fire crews who were involved in the massive operation to save the Pier when fire ripped through the Blue Room arcade on Wednesday afternoon.

The high profile visit came as the government announced a £2 million rescue package for the town’s tourism industry which the Prime Minister said would be given to the council to “keep Eastbourne in business”

He also told the Herald he was saddened to see the damage caused to the Victorian structure and praised the efforts of firefighters who managed to stop the fire spreading towards the end of the Pier attractions.
