Boxing Day swim: take the plunge say organisers

Plans are well underway for this year’s annual Boxing Day Swim by Willingdon Football Club .

Organisers are hoping this year’s post Christmas plunge on December 26, the 26th annual event, will attract more swimmers and beat last year’s record of 50 swimmers.

Swimmers will be raising money for two charities this year, the Alzheimer’s Society and St Wilfrid’s Hospice.

It takes place each year on the beach opposite the Cumberland Hotel and spectators are always welcome to go along and show their support.

A spokesperson for Willingdon FC said, “Other organisations sometimes do a festive holiday swim for charity which is great, but ours is by far the best known and longest running traditional Boxing Day Swim in Eastbourne.”

The swim starts at noon by Eastbourne Bandstand.

Anyone wishing to take part should contact the football club.

The Tuesday O’Hara Fund, which supports young people with cancer and leukaemia, also runs its own Boxing Day Swim and has raised thousands of pounds in previous years. That event is further along the seafront towards the Redoubt and is also on at lunchtime.
