An Eastbourne martial arts club has won a £250 grant to buy new kit for youth members, who learn to walk away from street fights.
The cash from UK Power Networks’ Team Sport Award will buy new gloves, punch bags and shin pads for youth members at Sparta Mixed Martial Arts Academy. The awards are designed to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and promote healthy living, teamwork and local sporting opportunities.
Marcin Zajac, from Eastbourne, who works in the electricity company’s groundworks team, applied to the scheme. Marcin became involved with the club three years ago and started volunteering as a coach for the club’s youth members last year. He said, “I was over the moon to win this award because the kit we are using is quite old. It’s going to make a big difference. The adults bring their own kit but we want to provide spare kit for the kids.
“Going to the gym and gaining fitness teaches discipline and respect for others. The kids can use this discipline in their wider lives and it makes them more focused in their school work. Training tires them out and they are calmer for it. They also learn to walk away from street fights.”
The youth side meets on Wednesdays from 5pm at 81-83 Dudley Road in Eastbourne but the gym and training facilities are open daily. The club is open to everyone from beginners to serious athletes – for further information visit the website: http://spartamma.co.uk/
The club was founded by Adam Urbanski who coaches the adults.
