Bogus caller conned Eastbourne pensioner

An 83-year-old man fell victim to a bogus caller who came to his home in Eastbourne on Friday (April 25).

At about 1.30pm the victim answered his door in Croxden Way to a man who claimed that he worked for the council and had completed works to his guttering.

He allowed him into his home and made him a cup of tea. The suspect claimed that he owed £50 and that the council would cover £140 cost of the work.

The victim paid him in cash but no such work had been carried out. Police were called when the man’s carer was told what had happened when she arrived later that afternoon.

House-to-house enquiries revealed that a number of homes were targeted by the same man on April 24 and 25. Fortunately the other residents had sent him away empty-handed.

The bogus man is described as white, aged in his 30s about 6’, of large build, with short cropped blonde hair. He was wearing a navy jumper and muddy blue jeans.

PC Pete Adsett said, “If anyone knows who this man is, or saw a man matching this description please contact us on 101 or email quoting serial 0962 of 25/04.”
