EASTBOURNE Rowing Club found a novel way to take part in the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race – and it didn’t involve jumping into the Thames.

Two of the club’s under-18 crews battled against each other using two new Concept rowing machines, one of which was funded by Eastbourne Lions Club, over the 6,800 metre race distance.

They then went head to head with the dark and light blues thanks to a live TV link provided by Davis TV.

Instead of being racing down the Thames from Putney to Chiswick, the crews were cheered on by shoppers in the Arndale Centre, with not a rogue swimmer or broken blade in sight.

The ‘Oxford’ crew triumphed by just 12 seconds.

A hamper of goodies supplied by local firms including Brewers, Cavendish Bakeries, Cooden Cellars, David Lloyd, Halfords, Lush, Sainsbury’s, the Chocolate House and Waterstones was won by local businessman Gary Prodger.

Club chairman Bob Noakes said, “We would like to thank all the local businesses for their generous support and we would also like to thank the shoppers who took the time to cheer our crews on and enter our raffle and chocolate tombola.”
