AFTER 20 years of saving lives in the waters around Eastbourne, an RNLI volunteer has become the latest recipient of the Resident of the Month Award.

Mark Chessell volunteered for the RNLI aged just 17 and became an official crew member three years later.

Recently, the RNLI presented him with a prestigious Long-Service Badge in recognition of his heroic service.

The Resident of the Month Award, sponsored by Advanta Chartered Accountants and the Eastbourne Herald, was introduced to highlight efforts of local residents who make major voluntary contribution in the community or excel in a particular sport.

Malcolm Toghill, Advanta managing director, said, “Anyone prepared to launch themselves into the stormy waters of the English Channel to save lives deserves huge gratitude and thanks. Whenever the call arrives, Mark will not flinch from tackling whatever sea-bound emergency awaits him. The bravery and courage of all the RNLI volunteers is exceptional.”

Next stop for Mark is Ridgway’s Restaurant in Meads where he and a guest will enjoy a complimentary meal for two. To nominate a Resident of the Month email or call 01323 411222.
