Almost 120 jobs created as Eastbourne seafront area gets facelift

A refurbishment of the seafront area in Eastbourne is set to create 118 new jobs.

Part of the facelift – paid for through Eastbourne Borough Council’s successful bid of £1.83m for Coastal Communities Funds – will see a new modern cafe in Princes Park as well as improvements to Sea Houses Square plaza in Seaside, a Coastal Culture Trail.

The cash will also help with training and skills in the construction and digital industries.

More than £900,000 alone is being spent on enhancing Princes Park.

Improvements include a new pedestrian link from the promenade, via a new zebra crossing, to the new entrance, making it easier for people to access the park, particularly from the seafront.

A new central plaza will link the new entrance to the café, which will be completely refurbished including new decking overlooking the lake.

The original cafe, Pistachios Café in the Park closed for business in December and Eastbourne Borough Council says it will be seeking a new operator for the eatery in the coming months.

Redundant bowling greens are also expected to be removed to allow for a new public space.

Princes Park is 33 acres which includes the boating lake and the Oval football ground. Originally called Gilbert’s Recreation Ground, after the owner, it was leased to Eastbourne council in 1907.

In 1931, King Edward VIII, then the Prince of Wales, visited the park and planted an Evergreen Oak and the park was shortly renamed Princes Park in his honour.
