A27 closed after serious smash

The A27 is closed in both directions following a serious accident today (May 4).

Two vehicles were involved in the crash at around 11.20am.

It took place on the Drusilla’s roundabout.

Police attended and closed the road between Drusilla’s and the A2270 Polegate by-pass.

Fire crews were called to the scene as people were trapped in their cars. One person was trapped in their car and two others were unable to get out due to the injuries they has sustained.

The firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the casualties. It took until 12.45 to free all three people from their vehicles. Fire crews remained on scene until 1.20pm.

Motorists leaving Eastbourne via Polegate were unable to use the road out to Lewes and the crash caused disruption in the area. There were reports of delays on the A259 too, as drivers avoided the scene.
