A MEDIEVAL festival took place at Michelham Priory at the weekend – with visitors from all over Europe flocking to the historic grounds.

Among the hundreds of people who made the step back in time were dozens who turned their hand to archery sessions, cheer on battling knights and jeered defeated joustists.

There were also fair ladies on horseback, a jester and a banquet complete with roast chicken, chunks of bread and traditional homity pie – an 18th Century dish made of potato, leeks, onions, apple, cheer, egg and a spot of milk.

As you can see from our pictures, the event was a hit with sword-wielding youngsters who enjoyed seeing history brought to life.
