A GROUP of Eastbourne churchgoers embarked on an unexpected pilgrimage when they had to make their way back from Israel in the chaos of the exploding Icelandic volcano.

The group of 17 weary pilgrims from All Saints Church in Grange Road returned home after a 750-mile cross-continent coach trip after their flight was grounded, as ash-cloud filled the skies.

CONCRETE from the Congress Theatre tumbled on a couple’s car while they were sitting inside.

Eastbourne Borough Council launched a full inquiry and scaffolding was erected around the building and an awning was later hung over the top. It is yet to be taken down.

It later emerged the building’s structure is badly damaged and the council chose to delay repairs while it investigated wider investment opportunities for the Devonshire Park site.
