Five lifebuoys were also vandalised on the beach at the beginning of the month

A spokesperson from Eastbourne Borough Council said, “The benches that have been vandalised are memorial benches. Memorial benches allow families to mark the passing of loved ones and provide a place for others to sit and enjoy our wonderful seafront.

“It is difficult to understand what possesses someone to commit such a mindless and callous act and we appeal to anyone who may have information about those responsible, to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or call the Police on 101.

“We met with partners including the Police this week and as a result we are increasing surveillance and our presence in the area.

“We will not tolerate any types of anti-social behaviour on the seafront. The promenade is there for everyone to enjoy and with our partners we’ll do what is required to keep it that way.”
