The national children's literacy charity and London art gallery Wilson Stephens & Jones are inviting memebers of the public to submit photographs of any arts or crafts they have created during lockdown.

The judging panel includes potter Emma Bridgewater, artist Hugo Guinness, landscape photographer Harry Cory Wright and textile artist Sarah Foot, each has donated fantastic prizes to the winners.

Schoolreaders asks that if able, entrants make a donation to help fund the charity’s vital literacy support service for primary school children. A donation of just £15 would enable Schoolreaders to provide a weekly reading session for a child for a whole academic year.

Entrants simply have to send in a photograph of their artwork and the categories include painting and drawing; photography; needlework and textiles and other creations.

Wilson Stephens & Jones have kindly agreed to display pictures of the top three entries in each category in their London-based gallery in an exhibition this autumn. The competition closes on the September 8, 2020.

Jane Whitbread, founder of Schoolreaders said: “Many people have rediscovered their artistic talents during lockdown and we want to celebrate this with our new competition, ‘CREATE! for Schoolreaders’. If you turned to painting, needlework or a different craft for fun, stimulation or even solace, we would love to see photos of your work. We are thrilled to have the support of some of the best-known artists in the country to judge the entries and they are generously donating their own art works as prizes.

“Before lockdown more than 10 per cent of primary schools in this country had signed up to Schoolreaders, requesting volunteers to help children with their reading. Our partner schools are telling us that Schoolreaders’ volunteers will be needed more than ever before when children go back in September as so many have fallen behind with their reading since the school closures.

“Reading is key to a child’s development, education and subsequent opportunities in life and we hope that this competition might enable us to help even more children improve their reading skills.”

Schoolreaders recruits volunteers to provide weekly one-to-one reading support to children in primary schools across the country and is unique in being the only nationwide charity to provide this service to schools for free.
