A Level results: Bede’s Senior School students shine

Bede’s Senior School in Hailsham is celebrating after 75 per cent of its A Level students received A* to B grades.

Forty per cent of students achieved an A* to A grade, and the school said it had ‘much cause to celebrate’.

Bede’s Headmaster Peter Goodyer said, “I am incredibly proud of our pupils who have achieved some outstanding results despite the obvious challenges which they have been confronted with over the course of the past five months. 

“This cohort has also contributed across all areas of school life and for this we thank them.

“We are also particularly excited to see our leavers departing, not only to some of the top universities in the UK, but also to prestigious universities in the US and elsewhere and we wish them all well.”

There were many individual successes, the school said, including Francesca Plaskett from Heathfield who gained three A*s in maths, further maths and biology and an A in chemistry and will go on to read experimental psychology at Oxford University.

She will join Jan Apolin who will also be beginning his degree in physics, the school said.

Eliane Boyer who, having completed her entire A Level programme in one year, gained straight A*s in maths, further maths, French and Latin and be will reading maths at St Andrews, according to Bede’s.

A Bede’s spokesperson said its heads of school also earned some ‘outstanding’ results, with Freddie Tuson getting four A*s in English, maths, theatre studies and Mandarin.

The school said Freddie will spend a year working as a learning mentor while applying to universities and drama schools.

Kristen Chan gained A*s in maths and physics and As in chemistry and further maths. He will take up an offer to read mechanical engineering at Imperial College in London, the school spokesperson said.

Ben Izett earned 4 A*s in physics, chemistry, maths and further maths and will go on to study physics at Edinburgh, the spokesperson said.

Kaylan Coetser, from Forest Row, gained A*s in maths and biology and As in chemistry and geography and will study medicine at Edinburgh, the spokesperson said.

Students who will be heading to the US to study include Marie Boyer, who gained A*, A, A, B and has chosen Columbia University in New York, the spokesperson said.

Tom Collins gained A*, A, B and has a place on a full football scholarship at Dartmouth University, the school said.

Bede’s Deputy Head John Tuson said, “It has become something of a cliché to suggest that this has been an academic year like no other - but it really has been an academic year like no other.

“These unusual circumstances however, in no way diminish the fantastic achievements of this talented group of pupils and I feel sure the fortitude and forbearance which they have developed during this time will provide them with lessons they will carry with them for life.”
