East Sussex College will be offering an Esports diploma from September 2021.

The level three diploma will help game-enthusiasts prepare for a successful career in a growing industry.

The course has been developed with the British Esports Association.

Students will study for two years and gain valuable skills and experience in areas such as game playing, the culture of Esports, and how to design, market, and deliver a competitive Esports event – according to a college spokesperson.

UK Esports is estimated to have grown at an annual average rate of 8.5 per cent between 2016 and 2019.

In 2020, global Esports was thought to have accounted for more than £800,000 in revenue – an annual growth of 15.7%, according to the 2020 Global Esports Market Report by Newzoo.

George Hedges, head of curriculum for computing at East Sussex College Lewes, said, “Esports is booming right now, and we’re really excited to be one of the only colleges offering this qualification anywhere in the South East.

“Students will learn industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects, they’ll develop knowledge in game theory, planning and character design, and understand IT technical support and cyber security processes.

“Game play is also a really attractive part of this course. The students will form part of a competitive Esports Team, with entry into national competitions.

“They also have an incredible opportunity to plan, promote and manage their own tournaments, initially within the college, but also aimed at a much wider audience.”

The course is now open for applications. The college is expecting a huge demand for this course, so prospective students are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
