A start-up business has secured substantial investment to bring hyperfast full-fibre broadband to the town – making it the first south coast town to become a gigabit area.

Billed as the ‘most profound infrastructure advancement to benefit residents and businesses in recent years’, Eastbourne company Lightning Fibre will build, install and operate a new full-fibre network in the town.

The new network will deliver multi-gigabit-capability of 10,000 megabits per second to over 100,000 homes and businesses in the area.

According to a recent report, the average speed users get in Eastbourne and Hastings from the old copper infrastructure is between 22-45 megabits per second.

Ben Ferriman, CEO of Lightning Fibre, said, “This is fantastic news for the town, for all residents and businesses.

“We can now accelerate our building programme in Eastbourne and then on to Hastings.

“Only about 14 percent of UK properties have full-fibre optic cables running all the way from the green cabinet on the street to their front doors, so it’s a very exciting time for the town, and will ultimately make Eastbourne a gigabit-town.

“This is putting Eastbourne at the forefront of the UK broadband revolution and giving our businesses and community the connectivity support they need and deserve.”

The network is already available in certain parts of Eastbourne and will now be rolled out at speed to the rest of the town within 24-36 months, followed by Hastings then the rest of East Sussex.

Priority will be given to areas that have registered the most interest.
