Neighbours say a white van was seen in the area at the time.

Within 24 hours of the theft, a fundraising appeal was set up and more than £1,100 has so far been donated.

A friend of the lady said, “She had been saving it up over time to have her trees and hedges cut in her back garden.

“She loves her garden and is quite poorly so this has obviously devastated her.”

Donations can currently be dropped off in a sealed envelope to the Castle Inn in Pevensey Bay or via paypal to [email protected]

Sue said, “Everyone has raised an amazing £1,100 which is more than double what she lost in the burglary.

“From the bottom of my heart thank you so much to everyone that took the time to donate during very hard times. The cash will be passed on the community’s behalf to a family member or a neighbour so the lady can now get her garden done.

“We’ve all done a good thing here and it shows how much people do care about each other in our small but unique community. It will enable her to turn a negative experience into a positive one.”

Gardening firms also offered their services to the lady.
