In the Stone Cross area north of The Crossways on Hailsham Road, close to the Pevensey bypass, there could be up to another seven houses built, according to planning documents submitted to Wealden District Council.

Clinton Development Ltd would like to build between five and seven residential houses on the land which is currently described in the plans as ‘inaccessible scrub land which has not been cleared for at least 20 years’.

The plans say the site is just outside the development boundary for Stone Cross.

Land south and west to the site was developed a number of years ago with housing and land east to the site on the opposite side of Hailsham Road has planning consent for housing too.

The land north of the site is the A27 Pevensey Bypass, making the site under consideration ‘infill development’, according to the documents.

This refers to the process of developing vacant parcels of land within existing areas that are already largely developed.

In a letter to the council, Clinton Development Ltd said, “We believe that approval to this application will make a positive contribution to the five year housing supply shortfall in the Wealden District and accords with central government policy for additional housing.”

A ‘little-used footpath’ crosses the site and the Clinton Development Ltd says it will ‘intent to retain’ this.

The documents also say the site has a ‘limited number of mature trees’ and if the application is approved there will be a thorough survey undertaken – something limited at this stage due to the amount of growth in the site.

The nearby bypass is not expected to cause ‘any impact by noise or pollution to the proposed houses’, according to the plans.

Members of the public can comment on this application until February 9.
