A planning application has been submitted to Wealden District Council to knock down The Moorings in Seaville Drive and build in its place six new homes.

They would include four four-bedroom houses and two two-bedroom houses.

The restaurant and bar has been closed since the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown.

In a planning statement submitted with the application, CKA Architectural, on behalf of the applicant Dennis Brazil, said up until recently the building was in use as a restaurant at ground floor level, with owner’s residential accommodation above.

A spokesperson said, “The former restaurant use operated as a ‘destination restaurant’ which tended to draw people in from beyond the local area, inevitably this would be predominantly by both cars and coaches from organised trips.

“The business model was to operate at high volumes of trade by offering ‘special offers’ such as a three course meal at a very low price. This high volume, low margin model meant a large number of customers.

“The current pandemic situation has meant it is no longer practical or economic to re-open the restaurant.”
