The business coach with Laura Murphy: I can’t take responsibility

Question: “I just don’t seem to be able to move the business on. I keep on finding reasons not to do something and now I’m stuck. How do I change?” Susan

Answer: “Taking responsibility can come hard to some people; it’s an undesirable thing to be responsible. Your internal image of what this means is what’s keeping you stuck and frustrated in your business. Identify your own behavior pattern, understand what’s blocking you, keeping you stuck and then you’ll be able to shift.

Reasons are excuses not to do anything. This is a negative, draining mindset so put your energy into something positive by creating and implementing solutions. You’ll get into a positive action/positive movement circle where mistakes become opportunities to learn and improve.

“It’s never the right time” means it will never be the right time, because that moment will never arrive. Waiting for everything to fall into place is the perfect excuse for inaction. Your unconscious is using that as a way to avoid taking responsibility and bizarrely trying to protect you. Identify and acknowledge the fear that’s holding you back and then find the solution to that fear.

I find a lot of women in business still put themselves 2nd or 3rd in the pecking order. A demanding client takes precedence, or low performing teams drain your energy, or even juggling the needs of family and friends. Doing this is another way of avoiding responsibility.

If you truly want to move the business on, stop giving away your power and energy to others. Take a step into the positive circle mentioned above. It will help you take that exciting and energizing step into doing something and taking responsibility.”
