NEUTRAL ON PHOENIX PLAN
A majority vote at a town meeting on December 7 called on the town council to use its influence on the planning authority to oppose the type of scheme proposed for the derelict Phoenix industrial estate.
But the council, meeting on Thursday last week, agreed that the vote of 81 for the action and 60 against (with an audience of roughly 400 present) did not represent a true reflection of the meeting.

Hide AdAngel Property wants to build 800 new homes, shops, offices, parking, new flood defences, a riverside walkway and a pedestrian bridge over the river at the site.
The council is to report the results of the public meeting to the planning authority but will not be expressing a view on it.
Cllr Michael Chartier said the planning process should prevail. An application should not be judged before it had appeared.
