Fire breaks out near Midhurst following lightning strike

A blaze at a property near Midhurst started after it was struck by lightning, according to the fire service.

At around 8am on Sunday, October 23, a West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) spokesperson said: “We are currently tackling a roof fire at a home in Henley Old Road, Easebourne. Please avoid the area if possible and keep windows and doors closed if you live nearby.

"Fire engines in attendance include ones from Midhurst, Petworth, Chichester, Billingshurst, Liphook, Haslemere, Farnham plus the command unit from Bognor Regis.”

Later in the day the service explained that it was called to the property by the occupants after an apparent lightning strike.

The spokesperson added: “The fire spread to the entire roof and has caused extensive damage. There is a large West Sussex Fire Service presence, assisted by our colleagues from Surrey and Hampshire.”
