This past week has been yet another busy week for oiled bird calls, this time most of them have been in the Eastbourne and Bexhill area.
We are also aware of a number of oiled birds coming ashore on the Kent coast too.

At the weekend we had a number of swans to deal with.
I was called to a swan being attacked by the pair of resident swans at Langney Pond.
The visiting swan was in the bushes bloody and bruised. After several children tried kicking the swan we decided to catch, check and relocate the swan for its own safety.
Luckily the swan was not seriously injured or ill and could be released at Princes Park. After releasing the swan I decided to do a check of the other swans present at the park.
One swan caught my eye as it had a swelling on the side of its head. It also seemed very lethargic and was not interested in feeding.
Murrae, Bill, Barry, Arron and I attended on site. We inflated the small boat and I put on my dry suit.
With Arron in the boat and myself wading through the water, we managed to get the swan cornered by the inlet.
Bill on the bridge managed to use a net to encourage the swan under the bridge to the weir where I was able to corner it.
Barry helped cover the escape route in case the swan got past me.
Luckily the swan was caught and assessed back at the vets. After an x-ray it was discovered that the swan had been shot.
There was some damage internally and it was decided to send the swan up to the swan sanctuary.

At about 2.50am on Sunday morning Tim received a call from Sussex Police about a road casualty swan at Kingsway, Hove. WRAS rescuer Tony Neads responded straight away and attended within 30 minutes. The police officers very kindly waited with the swan saving its life and preventing the swan from being injured any further. Tony collected the swan and took it to Coastway vets. In the morning both swans were taken up to the swan sanctuary.
ON Sunday afternoon, WRAS received another swan call from Hove Lagoon.
The swan was unable to stand and very weak. Pat Hanshaw went and checked and confirmed its condition and I drove over to catch it. When I arrived the RSPCA were on site too. So jointly we entered the lagoon and I easily caught the swan which did not struggle. After a brief check over the swan clearly was injured and further examination showed the swan was probably a victim of a dog attack. I rushed the swan to the hospital where it died a few minutes later. Checking the body, we confirmed that damage was caused by a dog.

We have had two injured sparrowhawks. The first one flew through a greenhouse and crashed into the glass falling to the ground. Gaynor, one of our new Horsebridge volunteers, attended and took it to Horsebridge. The second one was found in a garden in Rye. Arron attended and drove it back to Horsebridge for veterinary attention. The first sparrow hawk made a quick recovery and was released on Saturday so was taken back to where it was found. The other sparrow hawk is still in care.

East Sussex WRAS is a voluntary organisation which relies on donations. We do not receive funding from government nor the RSPCA.
